We keep the mill spirit alive
WHO WE ARE
Montgomery Kings Mills is a community heritage project for a village that built America — one powder keg, one canoe, one neighbor at a time.
Located on the Little Miami River between Mason, Maineville and South Lebanon, Kings Mills grew around the Kings Great Western Powder Company and later Peters Cartridge Company. Montgomery — our broader county home — gave us roads, schools and markets. Together they form a unique Ohio story: industry + nature + small-town warmth.
We collect photos, oral histories, maps and river data. We host clean-ups, walks, school programs and the annual Powder & Paddle Festival. This site is our digital town square.
- Archive: 4,200+ photos, deeds, payrolls 1887–1954 digitized.
- Education: free field trips for Kings Local Schools.
- Stewardship: river monitors + trail ambassadors every weekend.
02 / Heritage
From powder smoke to playground
1884 — Foundation
Kings Great Western Powder Co.
Joseph Warren King builds mills on the Little Miami. Water power, rail spur and 300 workers create a company village with store, school and band.
1916 — Peters Cartridge
Brass, bullets & boomtown
Peters Cartridge Company expands. Iconic brick factory, ball tower and workers' cottages still shape the streetscape on Grandin Road.
1913 & 1959 — River tests us
Floods and resilience
Great Flood of 1913 swamps mills. Community rebuilds. After closure in 1958, nature reclaims raceways — herons return.
1970s — Today
Trails, canoes & revival
Rail becomes Little Miami Scenic Trail. Kings Island brings joy next door. Mills become historic landmark, river — State & National Scenic River.

Did you know?
Kings Mills powder was used for mining, railroads and even early Hollywood blasting effects. The village had its own baseball team, the Powder Puffs, and a brass band that played on the factory lawn every Sunday.

The Little Miami Scenic Trail runs right through Kings Mills. Ride north to Waynesville for pie, south to Loveland for ice cream. The river is clean enough for smallmouth bass, soft-shell turtles and summer swims.

Every September: parade, canoe race, factory tours, bluegrass on the green. 8,000 visitors in 2025.
📚 Kings Schools Partnership
4th graders map the mill race; high schoolers record oral histories with former Peters workers.
🌿 River Guardians
Monthly clean-ups, water testing, eagle counts. 120 volunteers, 2.4 tons trash removed last year.
